The Sock Mob Events team are pleased to announce the launch of two new Unseen Tours led by homeless guides, featuring opulent Mayfair and bohemian Brick Lane.
Launching this Friday 1st July in partnership with the London Fringe Festival, our new guides explore these two very different parts of London, both of which share a history with the homeless.
You may think that Mayfair is an exclusive domain where the rich and famous come to play… but think again! The formerly homeless Mayfair guides will take you along a journey that exposes the area’s decadence alongside its working class roots, contrasts which persist to this day. This is, after all, the area to come to if you’d like to pick up a £12,000 hyena-shaped crystal tapestry on your way home from lunch at Claridges, but it’s also home to the homeless, with poverty, prostitution and squats existing cheek by jowl with some of the most expensive properties and elite clubs in the world.
And Brick Lane, so much more than curry houses and chic cafes, lends itself to an Unseen Tour that truly positions the East End of London as a hotbed of political activity. Trade unions, women’s rights and anti-racist campaigns flourished here, so you can get a good dose of exhilarating history before you browse the vintage boutiques and snaffle a delicious bite at the famous 24-hr Beigel Bake.
Our new guides, Vinny and Liz, will welcome you every Friday at 7pm and Sat/Sun at 3pm outside Green Park tube on Stratton Street (just follow the signs for the north of Piccadilly Street and look for the Stratton Street exit) for the Mayfair tour, and outside White Cube gallery in Hoxton Square for the Brick Lane tour.
