Sock Mob Events First Podcast

So a few months back, the Sock Mob and Unseen Tours were invited to give a chat about our work with the homeless on the Sonny and Shay show on BBC Radio London. Immediately after our interview, Westminster Councillor Daniel Astaire (yes, we erroneously refer to him as Alastair – our mistake) was interviewed via phone and accused our group of not really helping the homeless. In fact, he said that groups like the Sock Mob do more harm than good. Cllr Astaire is probably most noted for attempting to introduce bye-laws that would make it illegal for homeless people to sleep rough in Westminster and ban soup kitchens.  The soup kitchens are moving inside but the byelaw regarding making rough sleeping illegal was overturned.

We unfortunately were not able to give a rebuttal to his statements or have a debate about the issue. So Tisha and Matt decided to record a rebuttal which has become our first ever podcast.  You can take a listen above.

We’d like to reiterate that our offer to Cllr. Astaire still stands. We’d love to have him come and join the Sock Mob while they are out on the streets so that he can gain a greater understanding of the work that we do. We’d also love for him to come out on one of our tours. We think he’d find the stories of street life quite harrowing but also uplifting, and hope that they’ll challenge any preconceived notions that he has about homelessness.
